I admit it, I'm a sucker for books with princesses on the cover. In this case, that's a good thing, because Princess Ben is a very good book. Ben is short for Benevolence. Although her uncle is the king, she largely spends her time in common pursuits like playing in mud and eating. She is not really princess material. Her life changes, however, when her uncle and mother are murdered and her father disappears. Suddenly Ben is heir to the throne, and her aunt, Queen Sophia, is both regent and Ben's guardian. Needless to say, the two do not get along. Ben must find a way to thwart her aunt, save her country from invasion by the neighbors, and avoid being burned as witch, while at the same time avoiding royal suitors and finding something to eat.
Princess Ben is very clever and funny, and not at all typical of its genre in the best of ways. I laughed out loud more than once, and stayed up late into the night to finish it. Excellent book!
